Mr.Qaiser Abbas a lower middle class man got retired from Pakistan railway. He was getting 2000Rs per month as a retirement allowance. In this salary it was very hard to support a family of 6 children and a wife. In such a situation Mr. Abbas got to know about AHKMT (Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan memorial trust). AHKMT has been always trying to involve such people in their work. Mr. Abbas has started as an employ with some of the projects with AHKMT, then he was shifted to Solid waste project in 2008. For 2 years he has worked as so and a supervisor in the field for solid waste management projects by AHKMT. His job was to supervise the work by sanitary workers in the field; besides supervising Ms. Abbas also did motivation and communication with the community. In 2012 he was given the charge of an area as an independent entrepreneur. He has taken the responsibility of giving solid waste collection services to almost 1000 house hold of his area with three sanitary workers. He has been given 2 waste collection carts by AHKMT and one he arranged himself. Every sanitary worker was assigned 300 household for the service and service charge were taken 100rs per house hold. He is also looking after Haryali center, making composting from green waste. It was established by AHKMT for the purpose of making compost and then utilizing it for growing different kind of vegetables.
Mr. Abbas said that each sanitary worker is given 10,000 a month, and 10,000 they get from the recyclable material segregated from the collected waste, so total of 20,000 they earn in a month. The man was surviving on 2,000Rs. Now he generated job for further low income poor people. His own income is 25000 to 30,000 per month. He is running a successful and self-sustained business and he is very happy with it. His children were not able to go to schools before due to low income. Now his 4 children go to school, and one of the sons is studying engineering in one of the good institute. AHKMT intends to involve many others like Mr. Qaiser and help them to improve their life style as well as their environment.
